History
Two-Spirit is a contemporary umbrella term used by some Indigenous North American LGBTQ+ people to describe non-binary gender identities and sexual orientations that exist within their own cultural and spiritual traditions. The term was adopted at the third annual pow wow in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1990 as an alternative to Western LGBTQ+ terminology that does not align with Indigenous worldviews and practices. Many Indigenous cultures historically recognized multiple gender roles and identities that differed from the Western binary system, with individuals often holding special spiritual and social significance within their communities. The Two-Spirit flag and broader movement seek to reclaim and honor these traditions while creating contemporary space for Indigenous LGBTQ+ people within both Indigenous and LGBTQ+ communities.
